|
- 19 March - Representatives of striking farmers and their supporters from workers’ „Solidarity” are barred from speaking at a meeting held by the authorities of the Bydgoszcz Voivodship. Police enter the meeting room and manhandle the unionists out, beating „Solidarity” regional chairman Jan Rulewski, among others. The authorities say that Rulewski injured himself deliberately. A propaganda attack on „Solidarity” begins.

Stanisław Kociołek (1st Secretary of the PUWP Warsaw Voivodship Committee) at a meeting of the Political Bureau:
I have no doubt whatsoever that social tension has grown to almost intolerable levels and the situation in the country threatens to explode, if it hasn’t already. We are witnessing the majority of society being involved in an unarmed revolt against the political system, questioning the political structures of the state, the party and its leading role. Any evasions, any attempts at concessions will only postpone the moment when madmen will make a grab for power. Common sense ceased to exist, giving way to logic of counterrevolution, contrary to the obvious truth that only a socialist Poland can be independent and develop within its borders. […]
It seems that, after the talks in Moscow, we cannot help but take a tough stance. Our neighbours are concerned about our situation.
